Holly
Class 2011
Holly class
have been very busy since Easter!
We have
been researching, using the internet and non- fiction books,
finding out all about World War 2.
We have
made our own newspaper articles pretending to written them
during the war!
‘War News
Gazette’ or ‘The Daily World War News’.
We have
really enjoyed ourselves when we told stories and played old
games in our class ‘Anderson Shelter’ pretending to be in a air
raid!
We are
moving onto some story writing and looking at Enid Blyton to
find out some of the stories she wrote during this wartime
period.

Did you
know? –
Gas masks
had to be carried at all
times? Kites
were not allowed to be flown during the war as they could have
attracted enemy attention or mistaken for the enemy?
Apart from
all of our research and role playing in our Anderson Shelter we
have really enjoyed learning and listening to some traditional
war time songs. We know ‘It’s a long way to
Tipperary, Pack up your troubles and our
favourite Run, Rabbit Run!’
Not only
have we all enjoyed our WW2 songs but we have also some budding
drummers in Holly Class (in addition to our great guitarists).
We now offer drumming lessons at Ashlands through CHICS music
and we have some children who are enjoying learning to play on
our new drum kit!

We all have
really enjoyed our WW2 project so far and we haven’t even
finished yet!
We all
learnt a lot from our Science and Outdoor fortnight. Our visit
to Manor farm in Merriott was great- the favourite activities
being the stream dipping and measuring water levels from dipping
buckets into the stream. We did get a bit wet, but we didn’t
really notice!

During our
outdoor week Holly class
has also helped a lot
towards our beautiful Ashlands Mosaic which is going to be hung
permanently outside on our playground fence. It is of
Ashlands
School as a tree house in
an Ash tree amongst the clouds! Our visiting artist helped
design and make it but it was a coming together of the
children’s ideas and own designs. It will look fantastic in our
playground and we hope it will stay there for many years.

We look
forward to the next few weeks in Holly Class and are definitely
going to continue to enjoy ourselves…
